Kelpies are bred for work. Without exercise and mental tasks they can invent their own jobs, and owners often don't like them.

Short coat: a weekly brush with a rubber mitt or soft brush, regular nail trims and ear checks. Shedding is seasonal. Bath only when needed.
Kelpies learn fast, including the wrong things. Use reward-based training with short, frequent sessions. Teach an off-switch (settle on a mat), loose-lead walking and a reliable recall on a long line. Chasing movement (bikes, cars, kids) is common in herding breeds; manage it early and ask a qualified trainer. See training directory, and our beginner guides to toilet training, loose-lead walking and reliable recall.

It depends on the individual and the owner's time and training skills. Many first-time owners find high-drive breeds demanding.
Any dog can. A short coat makes hands-on checks easier. Ask your vet about prevention.
